As part of a joint programme co-hosted by the government of Colombia, the National Association of Mayors of Municipalities with Afro-Colombian Populations (AMUNAFRO), and Howard University, a delegation of Colombian Mayors, Afro-Colombian Leaders visited Washington D.C. to engage in high-level dialogues on inclusion, cooperation, and Afro-Colombian leadership.
The delegation included 20 mayors from historically Afro-descendant municipalities across Cauca, Chocó, and Nariño—departments emblematic of Colombia’s cultural and ethnic diversity.
During a meeting with Ambassador Daniel García-Peña, participants discussed strategies to deepen Colombia–U.S. cooperation and the visibility of Afro-Colombian contributions to the bilateral relationship.
“Welcoming this delegation in Washington is a reminder that foreign policy must also be rooted in the realities of our diverse territories. These local leaders carry with them the voices of communities that continue to shape Colombia’s democratic and cultural project,” said Ambassador García-Peña.
The visit reflects a broader commitment by the Colombian government to internationalise its inclusion agenda and strengthen the ties between diplomacy, local leadership, and diaspora engagement.
