ARC Gloria Showcases Colombia’s Maritime Heritage During SAIL250 Celebrations in New Orleans

The ARC Gloria, the Colombian Navy’s training ship and one of the country’s most recognizable symbols abroad, welcomed thousands of visitors in New Orleans as part of SAIL250, the commemoration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Docked at Bienville Street Wharf alongside some of the world’s best tall ships, the Gloria opened her decks to the public, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about Colombia’s maritime heritage, engage with members of her crew and experience first-hand the traditions and values that have shaped generations of Colombian naval officers.

Commanded by Capitán de Navío Héctor González León, the vessel arrived in New Orleans with a crew of 148 officers, non-commissioned officers and naval cadets, representing a new generation of Colombian naval leadership committed to service, professionalism and international cooperation.

“The ARC Gloria is more than a training vessel; she is a symbol of Colombia’s engagement with the world. Her participation in SAIL250 reflects the depth of the relationship between Colombia and the United States, built over decades of cooperation, mutual trust and shared commitment to security, prosperity and democratic values. It was an honor to welcome visitors aboard and share a part of Colombia’s maritime tradition with the American public.” said Ambassador Daniel García-Peña, who joined the vessel during its stay in New Orleans.

As Colombia’s ambassador of goodwill, the ARC Gloria serves as a platform for naval diplomacy, cultural exchange and international engagement. Her presence in New Orleans provided a visible reminder of the strong bonds that unite Colombia and the United States and of the shared commitment of both nations to security, cooperation and prosperity in the region.

The visit concluded with the ship’s ceremonial departure from New Orleans, during which her full crew manned the yards in a traditional naval farewell, bringing to a close a successful participation in one of the most significant commemorative maritime events taking place across the United States this year.
