Thousands of flowers cultivated in Colombia accompanied Memorial Day commemorations across the United States this week, forming part of remembrance ceremonies, volunteer initiatives, and tributes held at military cemeteries and commemorative sites throughout the country.

The initiative, led by the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation and Asocolflores, once again brought together volunteers, military families, representatives of Colombia’s floriculture industry, and American citizens around a tradition that has evolved into a meaningful expression of the enduring ties between Colombia and the United States.
From the preparation and organisation of bouquets to the hand delivery of flowers to visitors and families honoring fallen service members, volunteers participated throughout the day in acts of remembrance rooted in gratitude, memory, and shared respect. Across military cemeteries and commemorative spaces, Colombian flowers accompanied one of the most significant dates in the American civic calendar.

Colombia’s participation in Memorial Day reflects a bilateral relationship shaped not only by decades of institutional cooperation but also by profound human, cultural, and economic connections between both societies. Colombian flowers have long accompanied some of the most meaningful moments in American life, from celebrations and family milestones to moments of remembrance and tribute.

The Ambassador of Colombia to the United States, Daniel García-Peña, joined volunteers and representatives of the floriculture sector during the commemorative activities.
“Colombian flowers accompany many of the most significant moments in American life, and Memorial Day occupies a deeply special place among them. This gesture reflects the closeness between our peoples and the shared respect we hold for those who served and sacrificed so much for their families and their country,” Ambassador García-Peña stated.

The United States remains the principal destination for Colombian fresh-cut flowers. The floriculture industry sustains hundreds of thousands of jobs across Colombia and the United States alike and continues to represent one of the most dynamic commercial and human links between the two countries.

Asocolflores President Laura Valdivieso stated: “We deeply believe in the symbolic and human value of flowers. Today, Colombian flowers form part of this tribute in the United States, accompanying a day of remembrance and recognition for those who gave their lives in service to their country.”
Colombia’s participation in these commemorations also reflects decades of mutual trust and cooperation between Colombia and the United States, including one of the hemisphere’s closest partnerships in security and defence affairs.
