Washington Hosts Afro-Colombian Culture: San Pacho Celebrations Come to D.C.

Updated: Nov 27

Washington hosted the San Francisco de Asís celebrations for the first time, a landmark festivity deeply rooted in Colombia's Afro-Colombian heritage.

This cultural agenda, part of the Embassy of Colombia's Plurietnic and Multicultural programming, reflects Colombia's commitment to equity and inclusion. The introduction of the Fiestas de San Francisco de Asís to Washington D.C. serves as a platform to highlight Afro-Colombian traditions and discuss the future of Colombia.

"At the heart of the Fiestas de San Pacho lies a profound celebration of Afro-Colombian heritage and identity. Bringing this event to Washington, D.C., for the first time is a juncture in cultural diplomacy that underscores Colombia's commitment to equity, inclusion, and the recognition of our diverse national identity." — Ambassador Daniel García-Peña, Embassy of Colombia in the United States.

Programme Highlights included:

  • Panel discussions on the reactivation of the CAPREE (Afro-Colombian, Raizal, and Palenquero Ethnic Chapter) and advancing equality policies.

  • A ceremonial featuring the passing of the Bastón de Mando Franciscano to Ambassador Daniel García-Peña.

  • Performances by Grupo de Danza DC Chocó and a concert by Orquesta Bambazulú.

  • San Pacho Parade, where cultural expressions like chirimía music and vibrant crews brought the streets to life, celebrating Afro-Colombian traditions.

  • The "El Último Fusilado - Saturio" screening showcased a cinematic reflection of Afro-Colombian history and identity.

These events served as a powerful example of cultural diplomacy, connecting Colombia's diaspora to its roots while amplifying the voices of our communities in the regions.
