Washington D.C., 20 September 2024 – At an event organized by the Embassy of Colombia in the United States, attended by Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo, Defense Minister Iván Velázquez, and Colombian Ambassador Daniel García-Peña, General Laura J. Richardson, Commander of U.S. Southern Command, highlighted the strength of the bilateral relationship between Colombia and the United States.
The evolution of security and defense cooperation has transformed into a key driver of inclusive regional development. The event also paid tribute to General Laura Richardson for her leadership in strengthening this strategic partnership.
The cooperation between Colombia and the United States has expanded beyond the traditional security pillars, embracing joint efforts in cybersecurity, regional defense, and the fight against climate change, contributing to regional stability and sustainable development. This comprehensive transformation reflects a mutual commitment to hemispheric stability, enabling both nations to tackle emerging challenges together.
Ambassador Daniel García-Peña remarked: “We are immensely proud of the joint work between Colombia and the United States. Our relationship has evolved into one of the finest moments in recent history, becoming a force for inclusive development that benefits Colombia and the entire region.”
General Laura J. Richardson emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating: “Colombia is a leader in the region, and the work we’ve done together has made a difference not just for the Colombian people, but for the entire continent. This partnership, which I call the ‘Democracy Team,’ shows how like-minded democracies can overcome security challenges together in unity.”
Richardson also highlighted the Unitas naval exercises and the delivery of mobile bridges to Colombia, demonstrating the ability to respond to climate emergencies and natural disasters. “These efforts exemplify the close cooperation between our military forces, with a tangible impact on regional stability and development,” she added.
