U.S. Army Gen. Laura Richardson Enhances Security and Disaster Response Capabilities During Visit to Colombia

U.S. Army Gen. Laura Richardson, commander of U.S. Southern Command, visited Colombia and Brazil from May 21-26 to discuss and enhance security cooperation. Accompanied by SOUTHCOM’s Senior Enlisted Leader, U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Benjamin Jones, the trip reinforced U.S. defense partnerships with its regional allies, reaffirming Colombia's role as a key security partner in the region.


In Bogotá, Gen. Richardson met with President Gustavo Petro to discuss the Colombia-U.S. security alliance and regional safety initiatives. She also participated in a seminar titled "Military Women United with a Common Purpose: Leading Changes into the 21st Century," where she emphasized the importance of gender equality in military ranks


Gen. Richardson visited Colombia’s northwest border to assess humanitarian efforts in Darién and visited Tumaco, where she met with the elite Joint Task Force Hercules, tasked with combating illicit trafficking and armed groups.
