Ambassador of Colombia to the United States, Luis Gilberto Murillo first encounter with students in Washington DC.
New Ambassador of Colombia in the United States, Luis Gilberto Murillo met with fifteen Colombian students who came to Washington DC under Diaspora Connect, a program created by Howard University, Universidad del Valle and Universidad Tecnologica del Choco (UTCH) and funded with a grant they won through the 100 K Strong of the Americas fund of the Department of State of the United.
According to the web page of the 100 K Strong, the program aims to “support and uplift students of African descent in pursuing and completing higher education and providing them with a transformative international experience. In this exchange program, students explore the spectrum of Black identities beyond their own, through elements of dialogue and recognition of each other’s different historical backgrounds and current realities, to strengthen their leadership skills and build bridges across the diaspora”.
Last May a group of nine students from Howard University visited Cali, Colombia, and learn about parts of the pacific culture, gastronomy, politics among other topics, and also met and share experiences with these twelve students that are since Septiember 7th in Washington DC learning about history, civilization, and international relations in the capital of the US.
For Ambassador Murillo the meeting at the Embassy had a special meaning. Not only for the need to keep connecting African Descendants from Colombia and the US, but because he is originally from Choco and studied in UTCH.
With a warm introduction Ambassador Murillo addressed each of the students and teachers and highlighted the importance of education, effort and focus in the development of these Colombians that are the future of the country.
The students also learn about the work at the Embassy from presentations of other diplomats that explained their job and activities and watch a short informative video about the mission of Colombia in the United States under the government of President Gustavo Petro. .
The visit is part of the usual activities that Embassy of Colombia to the United States organize to inform, teach and also learn from different academic audiences in the US.
This was the first of many encounter Ambassador Murillo will have with Colombians and Americans in the coming months.

El 1er encuentro del Embajador de Colombia ante Estados Unidos, Luis Gilberto Murillo con estudiantes colombianos y norteamericanos
El nuevo Embajador de Colombia en los Estados Unidos, Luis Gilberto Murillo se reunió con quince estudiantes colombianos que llegaron a Washington DC bajo Diaspora Connect, programa creado por Howard University, Universidad del Valle y Universidad Tecnológica del Choco (UTCH) y financiado con una subvención que ganaron a través del fondo 100 K Strong of the Americas del Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos.
De acuerdo con la página web de 100 K Strong, el programa tiene como objetivo “apoyar y animar a los estudiantes afrodescendientes a seguir y completar la educación superior y brindarles una experiencia internacional transformadora. En este programa de intercambio, los estudiantes exploran el espectro de identidades negras más allá de la propia, a través de elementos de diálogo y reconocimiento de los diferentes antecedentes históricos y realidades actuales de cada uno, para fortalecer sus habilidades de liderazgo y construir puentes a través de la diáspora”.
El pasado mes de mayo un grupo de nueve estudiantes de la Universidad de Howard visitaron Cali, Colombia, y conocieron partes de la cultura pacífica, gastronomía, política entre otros temas, y compartieron experiencias con estos doce estudiantes que ahora están en Washington DC aprendiendo sobre historia, movimiendos sociales y relaciones internacionales en la capital de los Estados Unidos.
Para el Embajador Murillo el encuentro tuvo un significado especial. No solo por la necesidad de seguir conectando estudiantes de Colombia y Estados Unidos, sino porque el es oriundo de Chocó y estudió en la UTCH.
Con una cálida introducción el Embajador Murillo se dirigió a cada uno de los estudiantes y docentes, y resaltó la importancia de la educación, el esfuerzo y el enfoque en el desarrollo de estos colombianos que son el futuro del país.
Los estudiantes aprendieron del trabajo de la Embajada a través de presentaciones de otros diplomáticos que explicaron su trabajo y actividades. Tambien vieron un breve video informativo sobre la misión de Colombia en los Estados Unidos bajo el gobierno del presidente Gustavo Petro. . La visita es parte de las actividades habituales que organiza la Embajada de Colombia en los Estados Unidos para informar, enseñar y aprender de diferentes audiencias académicas en los EE.UU. Este fue el primero de muchos encuentros que tendrá el Embajador Murillo con colombianos y estadounidenses en los próximos meses.
