In a warm meeting, the Ambassador of Colombia to the United States Luis Gilberto Murillo received representatives of the National Association of Mayors and Governors of Municipalities and Departments with Afrodescendant Population, known as AMUNAFRO, and members of the Association of African American Mayors, AAMA, to formalize a memorandum of understanding that will allow them to strengthen, with concrete actions and under a work plan, the ties of cooperation in commercial, educational and cultural issues, among others, for the benefit of the African diaspora in Colombia and the United States.
The signing of the agreement took place at the Colombian residence after a working meeting that continued with a signing ceremony that began with words from AMUNAFRO's Executive Director, Jaime Asprilla, AAMA's President and Mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas Frank Scott Jr. and USAID's Senior Assistant for International Development, Peter Natiello.
Once the signing ceremony was over, Ambassador Murillo referred to those present with warm words, thanking them for their presence in what he called a "small representation of what Colombia is", highlighting his familiarity with the mayors and representatives of AMUNAFRO, and his friendship with AAMA's directors.
For his part, the President of AAMA, the Mayor of Little Rock Arkansa, Frank Scott Jr, thanked the reception and the desire of the government of Colombia to strengthen these ties to strengthen projects in which the African diaspora in Colombia and the United States will benefit.
Likewise, the Senior Assistant to the Agency for International Development, or USAID, Peter Natiello, affirmed that he would accompany this partnership from his platform.
Ambassador Murillo stated that "for me it is a priority to stimulate these initiatives and serve the Afro-descendant populations in Colombia and the United States, following the guidelines of President Petro who has highlighted the values that we share and that allow us to continue expanding our network of friends in this country for the benefit of our most vulnerable communities".
As part of this effort, AMUNAFRO representatives will also hold meetings with the State Department, which has expressed special interest in supporting this type of agreement. It is also expected that another MOU will be signed with the Organization of American States in order to expand the possibilities for these communities at the hemispheric level.
This is the beginning of a series of efforts planned to consolidate bilateral cooperation projects on climate change, biodiversity conservation, energy and socio-ecological transition, peace, human rights, migration and inclusion, which according to Murilllo "pave the way for the next 200 years of relations between Colombia and the United States".
Asociaciones Afrodescendientes de Colombia y EEUU oficializan alianza para trabajar en proyectos conjuntos
En una cálida reunión, el Embajador de Colombia en Estados Unidos Luis Gilberto Murillo recibió representantes de la Asociación Nacional de Alcaldes y Gobernadores de Municipios y Departamentos con Población Afrodescendiente, conocida como AMUNAFRO, y miembros de la Asociación de Alcaldes afroamericanos, AAMA, por sus siglas en inglés, para oficializar un memorando de entendimiento que les permitirá fortalecer, con acciones concretas y bajo un plan de trabajo, los lazos de cooperación en temas comerciales, educativos y culturales, entre otros, para beneficio de la diáspora africana en Colombia y Estados Unidos.
La firma del acuerdo se llevó a cabo en la residencia de Colombia tras una reunión de trabajo que continuó con una ceremonia de firma que arrancó con palabras del director ejecutivo de AMUNAFRO, Jaime Asprilla, del presidente de AAMA y alcalde de Little Rock, Arkansas Frank Scott Jr. Y el Asistente Senior de la Agencia para el Desarrollo Internacional, o USAID por sus siglas en inglés, Peter Natiello.
Una vez terminó la ceremonia de la firma, el embajador Murillo se refirió a los presentes con palabras afectuosas, agradeciendo su presencia a lo que el denominó como una “representación pequeña de lo que es Colombia”, destacando su familiaridad con los alcaldes y representantes de AMUNAFRO, y su amistad con los directivos AAMA.
Por su parte el Presidente de AAMA, el alcalde de Little Rock Arkansa, Frank Scott Jr, agradeció la recepción y el deseó del gobierno de Colombia de estrechar estos vínculos para fortalecer proyectos en los que la diáspora africana en Colombia y Estados Unidos serán beneficiados.
Así mismo, el Asistente Senior de la Agencia para el Desarrollo Internacional, o USAID por sus siglas en inglés, Peter Natiello que afirmo que acompañaría esta asociación desde su plataforma.
Al respecto el Embajador Murillo afirmó que “para mi es una prioridad estimular estas iniciativas y servir a las poblaciones afrodescendientes en Colombia y Estados Unidos, siguiendo los lineamientos del presidente Petro que ha destacado los valores que compartimos y que nos permiten seguir ampliando nuestra red de amigos en este país para beneficio de nuestras comunidades más vulnerables”.
Como parte de este esfuerzo, los representantes de AMUNAFRO también sostendrán reuniones con el Departamento de Estado, que ha expresado especial interés en apoyar este tipo de acuerdos. Así mismo, se prevé que se firme otro MOU con la Organización de Estados Americanos con el fin de ampliar las posibilidades para estas comunidades a nivel hemisférico.
Este es el inicio de una serie de esfuerzos previstos para consolidar proyectos de cooperación bilateral en temas de cambio climático, conservación de la biodiversidad, transición energética y socio ecológica, paz, derechos humanos, migración e inclusión que según Murilllo “allanan el camino para los próximos 200 años de relaciones entre Colombia y Estados Unidos”.
