Acting Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo addressed the United Nations Security Council meeting on the Middle East, including the Palestinian question

New York Washington D.C, April 18, 2024

Acting Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo reaffirmed Colombia's stance on Palestine, supporting its admission as a full member of the United Nations, stressed the primacy of adhering to and respecting International Law, and reiterated Colombia's proposal for convening an international peace conference.

His message:

"The absence  of a lasting solution to the Palestinian question is testing the capacity of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, to fulfil its primary mandate, namely, the maintenance of international peace and security."

He added: "The incessant violence that we have witnessed over the past six months in the Middle East is unacceptable. Despite repeated appeals from almost all of the members of this organization to put an end to the attacks in Gaza and the growing violence in the West Bank, we are witnessing a humanitarian disaster and a conflict which has not only continued but has spread."

Acting Foreign Minister Murillo concluded by stating that Palestine's full membership in the UN legitimizes and strengthens its dialogue as a state and with a view towards negotiation, as proposed by President Petro at UNGA78. Such negotiation could take place within the framework of an International Peace Conference.
