Colombia and United States Co-Host Regional Gathering to Find Solutions to Migration Issues

  • President Duque made a strong call to the international community for quick and effective disbursements to support Venezuelan migrants during the Ministerial Conference on Migration, organized by the Colombian Foreign Ministry and co-hosted by the U.S. Department of State.

  • President Duque also asked the International Organization for Migration, the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees and the cooperation agencies, to support a real census on the number of migrants: “Without precise information, we will not be able to have precise public policies in our countries.”

  • Colombia identified three essential aspects to consider in the search for a sustainable solution:

- Addressing the causes of migration, - Addressing the humanitarian responsibilities of origin, transit and destination of migrants, and - Creating a special group of regional authorities to find solutions to effectively combat trafficking in persons and to dismantle criminal organizations responsible for this crime.
